Special Populations Statement

This division provides leisure programs and opportunities for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The programs offered are adapted and modified when necessary to provide the most successful opportunities for participation in all leisure activities.

Volunteers

We always need VOLUNTEERS to help with our Special Olympics athletic events. You can come for a while or stay all day, but be sure to bring your “Helping Hands” to help bring out the winner in all our athletes.

The Recreation & Parks Department works closely with other organizations to understand and provide leisure, recreation and athletic opportunities for all citizens. Many programs and classes are adaptable for special needs individuals; when necessary to provide the most successful opportunities for participation in activities.

In addition to adapting programs and classes for special need participants, staff members also regularly participate and help facilitate this area's Special Olympics sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with disabilities. This gives our special populations continuing ways to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and lead full lives. The participants also learn to share their gifts, skills, and friendship with other Special Olympians and the community.
