City of Jackson, TN City Council Approves Single Stair Housing Ordinance
Posted on 12/03/2024

JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Jackson City Council has taken a significant step to address the city’s growing housing needs by approving the Single Stair Housing Ordinance on first reading during the December 3, 2024 council meeting. This ordinance introduces a modernized approach to residential building design, focusing on flexibility, safety, and increased opportunities for urban housing development.

The Single Stair Housing Ordinance allows for alternative building designs, including single stairwell configurations, which maximize space utilization while maintaining compliance with safety standards. This innovative approach aims to promote more cost-effective construction methods and encourage the development of housing units that cater to a diverse range of residents, from young professionals to families and retirees.

“Our goal with this ordinance is to make housing more accessible and adaptable while ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents,” said Mayor Scott Conger. “We believe this change will empower developers to think creatively about urban spaces, helping us meet the growing demand for housing in our city.”

The adoption of this ordinance aligns with Jackson’s strategic vision for urban growth and sustainability. By providing more regulatory flexibility in our building codes, the city hopes to encourage private investment and foster the creation of housing options that meet the evolving needs of the community.

This initiative is part of the City of Jackson’s broader commitment to addressing housing affordability, promoting efficient land use, and supporting economic growth through innovative policy measures.
